Cri-Help Course Report -March 15, 2005
Instructors: Devang Vussonji, Christine Miller, Anthony Passaro, Laura Cooney

We had a very good session at Cri-HELP. It was a large class and we faced a few initial challenges since most of the instructors were new. By the end of the class, though, most of the students had learnt a lot about computers.

One challenge in such a big class was trying to work at different levels of proficiency. On one occasion, two students who were acquainted with Microsoft Word completed the exercise in two minutes and then started disrupting the class. I went over and asked them to complete the same exercise again, but without using the mouse. They were baffled at first, but once they realized the power of keyboard shortcuts, it was difficult to get them off the computer when their time was up.

It was also very pleasing to see a couple of absolute beginners develop the patience to use computers. An older student was initially finding it very difficult to control mouse movement, but he worked very hard and he was one of few students who managed to type the term paper on the computer. It is always pleasing to see hard work pay off.

I am confident that every class is one step closer to shattering the digital divide.
