Cri-Help Course Report - March 13, 2007

Instructors: Sunny Saran, Mark Macedo, James Farrell, Jim Fitzgerald, Norelia Jacinto

Overview:
The curriculum worked well for the students and instructors. From my point of view it was very easy to teach, was structured to progress gradually from simple to more complex concepts, and was well received by the students. There was an apparent difference in how students absorbed the material – some struggled and others seemed a bit bored. But the majority of students were kept interested and engaged.

Strong points of curriculum:
· Emphasis on the basics of the Windows user interface · Progression from basic typing to window/UI manipulation to MS Word usage · The final project of writing and presenting a paper works well to engage and drive the students

Weak points of curriculum:
· The computer terminology quiz tends to confuse students due to the quiz definitions not matching the definitions presented in class · The presentation of e-mail terms is rushed and most students don’t absorb the material fully · Mavis Beacon typing is extremely helpful, but there is no monitoring of student WPM (words per minute) progress

Two students in particular showed promise.

Sonia Diaz: This is the second time that Sonia has taken the course as she was unable to complete it in time last year. She worked diligently to compose her paper and to understand the course material. Her paper was eventually chosen for presentation at graduation and Sonia is committed to pursuing her goal of becoming a sponsor.

Michael Smith: Michael readily admits that he’s made many mistakes in his life and does not want to continue down that path. He was particularly interested in the course material and has expressed a desire to learn more about computer technology. Michael would be an excellent candidate for any additional computer training that CDD may offer.
