Instructor End of Course Report
Cri-Help Course Report - March 2011
Instructors: Elisa, Bharat, Robert, Manuel
Overall the courses went well. The material contained a balance of basic terms and concepts and some more advanced topics.
The first 4 sessions were all about getting to know the computer parts and terminology and concepts of a computer. Since Elisa, Manuel and Bharat were first time teachers they did not know what to expect but, they found that the students were very cooperative and were eager to learn about computers. They were immediately asking about what the course contained and what they wanted to learn. Thankfully most of their comments and requests would be covered during the course.
From the first session all instructors talked about the student essays and how important it was toward graduation. Students were immediately thinking about what to write. Having them practice writing outlines was also a big help for them as they figured out what worked for their essays. Having announced the essays from the beginning was a helped the students get focused and more into the course.
The computer discovery terms were a big hit. Students were interested in getting to know the computer parts and how they operate with one another. During the sessions, some students asked me(Manuel) to review in more detail the workings of the computer parts. The students also showed interest in the terminology.
During the second half of the course, the teachers began teaching more advanced concepts such as the cut and paste feature and opening multiple windows. The students put the concepts taught to use as they began typing their essays or practicing word.
Students also began practicing typing which most students had not had the opportunity to do so. The students were satisfied with all computer concepts taught to them.
All the students had great stories of personal struggle and triumph. There were some students in particular that touched not only the instructors but the other students as well.
Veronica was of great inspiration; she is a recovering addict who had been in the Cri-Help program for over a month. She is near to completing her stay and showed immediate interest in the course. Always one of the first to be in class and the most expressive of her feelings and goals, she quickly became a speaker of the class. Veronica had a pen and paper and wrote all the notes written on the board. She would have a few questions and comments every class. Every instructor was very touched by her motivated attitude and her commitment to learning the material.
Another student that was very influential was Richard. He proved to be a great speaker and commentator in the class. He immediately showed his upbeat characteristic and demonstrated his enthusiasm for the class. He would always ask questions about what was taught and always tried to use the terminology taught. Richard was always eager to learn and apply the lessons learned when working during lab time. He was always asking questions that extended beyond the regular course teachings. Besides being a good student he always was a great motivator to the other students and kept the class in good humor with his comments during some of the sessions. Richard transformed himself into a more knowledgeable person and in return he gave the instructors a great outlook at life. Even though he has had it rough, his humor and general attitude was still bright.
The Cri-help sessions went very well. All graduating students commented that they learned a lot during their classes.
The classes are well structured. The first time teachers did not find it difficult to use the workbook and teach the concepts.
The one issue that would come up from time to time is the some of the students did not have paper and writing utensils.
Also, the computers need to be checked up for certain program malfunctions and memory upgrades.
Overall the CDD course is a great tool for success for all the people who are willing to take it.
