Cri-Help Course Report - October 2008

Instructors: Ryan Saucerman, Derin Oyekan, Joanne Untalan, Pablo Perea

Beginning Date: 9/16/08

Graduation Date:  10/21/08

The September/October CDD course at Cri-Help produced 8 graduates.  Although a small number of students graduated this time around, the class worked hard and showed considerable enthusiasm throughout the session.

The lectures and lab were smooth and the students benefited learning about computers. Whether it was learning the various computer parts, practicing their typing skills with Mavis Beacon, learning Windows basics, or learning MS Word, it was evident that the students enjoyed applying their new found knowledge.

The small class size allowed the instructors offer more individual attention to the students. One of the major requirements in the curriculum is writing a 500 word essay titled, “My Personal Plan for Success.” This particular assignment requires a great deal of time and effort on the students’ part since it involves brainstorming, creating and outline, and finally putting together the final product in essay format. We are proud to report that each student at Cri-Help received considerable attention and assistance in writing the essay. This class was special since every student put a lot of “heart” into their papers as well as presentations.

This session posed a few new challenges for Cri-Help instructors. First of all, CDD struggled with establishing permanent instructors for this session as well as finding substitutes to fill in the gaps. This is probably due to a combination of many factors including a troubled economy, the increased work and school demands of current volunteers, and the distant location of the North Hollywood based center. Secondly, many students dropped class for a number of reasons that are beyond CDD’s control.  Each session brings about a number of student issues that are usually personal in nature and are not directly influenced by the study requirements of the computer class.
Regardless of the challenges faced this time around, CDD instructors displayed true professionalism throughout the session. CDD is certainly proud of our Cri-Help graduates and the CDD team that helped them achieve success!
