Cri-Help Course Report -December 16, 2004
Instructor: Tom, Sam, Laura, Patrick

On Tuesday December 7, 2004, Crossing the Digital Divide held another successful graduation ceremony at Cri-Help in North Hollywood. There were a grand total of 19 students that met the requirements while taking the Basic Computer Course.

In front of a full crowd of clients from Cri-Help and their sister facility, Socorro, I had the privilege of being the Master of Ceremonies for the event. I welcomed everyone to the ceremony, briefly talked about CDD and my experiences volunteering, and I also encouraged people to sign up and take the next class we will be offering.

I invited Tom Stutz, one of the devoted instructors for this session to come up and share a few thoughts about his teaching experience. After receiving a warm welcome from the audience, Tom spoke about the many things that the students learned and accomplished this session and how he was very proud of all of the hard work done in the past six weeks. Dr. Clark Feldman, CDD board member and clinical psychiatrist was introduced as the ceremony’s Guest Speaker. Dr. Feldman spoke about the importance of over coming your fears and battling addiction.

Then I had the pleasure of introducing the first student presenter, Michael Colletti. He spoke of he how he always thought that computers would never play a formal part in his career and how this class had really opened his eyes. He talked about his past experience as a hairdresser and how computers and the World Wide Web could help him take his dream of starting his own business to new heights.

The next presenter was Louis Landros from Socorro. He made a very unique presentation of his “Business Proposal for Success”. He said that taking this class has motivated him to start a music and video producing company. He spoke of how his business would be located in the United States, but he would have the majority of the factory labor done in a plant in Mexico. All communication between the two locations will take place via a computer network. The workers for this company would be recruited from Cri-Help and Socorro and his company would provide stable jobs and a positive working environment.

This class was animated and full of personality and it was shown when the students came up to receive their certificates. As each graduate was called up to receive their certificate, the enthusiastic audience cheered them on. John Flynn, another dedicated CDD volunteer served as the photographer and made sure this special time was captured on film. John coordinated the individual student photos and the group photos.

In closing, I offered the graduates one last round of applause and congratulations, reminded people to sign up for the next class, and invited everyone to celebrate with us by having some refreshments.

Once again, CDD was successful in completing another training session, improving the lives of many students that completed the training and celebrating with a well-organized and exciting graduation ceremony. I am very happy to have had the chance to participate!
