House of Uhuru Course Report - May 6, 2006
Instructors: Levi Gundert, Greg Shin, Enrique Reyes and Dwight Harm

The new class gave us an opportunity to experience why the instructors love to volunteer. We met a new group of students that were eager, motivated, and determined to learn new computer skills despite their challenges and problems. It was a pleasure to see them grow into more confident computer users as the session progressed. The student's were able to improve their typing skills, as well as their skills using the mouse, exploring Windows, and using MS Word. The improvements were noticeable as they completed their assignments; the outline, title page and finally the essay.

The students really enjoy the Internet portion of the class. I think they particularly were excited to learn how to use email. Some students had never created or used an email account. Consequently, they were very excited about being able to send messages to each other and other friends and family. They also looked forward to using their email accounts to send their resumes and inquire about job possibilities. It is a shame that only about 2 total hours are spent on how to use the Internet. I wish more time was spent on helping them understand how to find important on-line resources, such as jobs info, student loans, job and career training etc. However despite this small problem they really benefit from this introduction, it is great to see them truly cross the digital divide.

The students also surprised me with the quality of their papers, over half the class did an outstanding job of writing their essays. Three students really stood out this session, Felicia, Michael, and Rhonda. They made it very difficult to choose a speaker. However, there is always a handful of students who struggle because they simply lack the skills needed to create a 500 word essay. I would suggest to future instructors to try to identify those students that will need extra help as early as possible and spend extra time assisting them.

This session, 11 students received completion certificates. This is a nice improvement from the previous classes, in fact this is the highest number of students that have graduated in the past three sessions I have been at Uhuru.

Thanks Uhuru team; Levi, Greg, and the substitutes who helped us during the session.
