House of Uhuru Course Report - May 2008

Instructors: Becky Ha, Lucy Beer, Ethan Resnizk, Joel Kent

Overall, this session of the CDD Basic Computer Skills course at the House of Uhuru was a great success. All of the students (6) who stayed for the entire 5-week program graduated. But beyond the numbers, from my own personal experiences during the weeks and from conversing with the other teachers, the students got a great deal out of this program, and learned so much, in such a short amount of time.

Although I missed the first week when there was a dispute between the students about seating, the reception of the students towards Ethan and myself, and their fellow students was warm and cooperative. It was truly apparent that they really wanted to be in this course and were eager to learn as much about computers as they could.

At the end of the program, I was amazed how much all of the students (even those with prior experience with computers) had learned in such a short amount of time. Listening to the students’ presentations of their papers, each student made it clear how the computer skills that they had learned in these past few weeks, would have such a positive impact towards their personal plans for success.
