Walden House Course Report - May 2008

Instructors: Ronald Chu, Timothy Beer, Derin Oyekan, Shaan Rupani

This session at Walden house like all the others for me was an overall positive experience. Having taught at Walden House for several sessions now, it is always personally rewarding to see former students and catching up with them. We’re referred to as the “computer guys” by staff and residents which I definitely get a kick out of.

I was truly inspired by the effort put in by Michael, Raymond H and S, Dennis and Kenny. They truly epitomize what the class is about as they came in with almost no knowledge about computers but gave 110% effort to take full advantage of the class and absorb as much information as they could in the 6 week session. Their curiosity and excitement about things basic to most of us like email was truly refreshing.

The highlight of the session for me had to be the graduation where I think Raymond H. gave a very moving speech. His words about wanting to better himself and feeling secure and confident in pursuing jobs where computers are used validated all of our efforts in the classroom. I’m sure he’ll go far and it’ll be good to see where he is 5 years from now.

My partner for this session Shaan did an excellent job of instructing. He was always patient yet assertive with the students. I believe more than the computer instructions, the students also learned about commitment, discipline and charity from us. We undoubtedly had our challenges this session mostly around student tardiness and schedule conflict for instructors, but through it all we were able to help our students graduate.
